This is our warm breakfast almost every morning – steelcut oat with raisins, raw cacao powder, ground flaxseeds and cinnamon powder.
A warm oatmeal; and vegetable and fruit juice are what we have every morning.
What are steelcut oats and their benefits?
Steelcut oats are actually whole grains, which pass through steel cutters which chop them into three or four pieces. Steel cut oats have minimal processing unlike the usual instant rolled oats that I used to eat. As they still contain the whole grain including the oat bran, steel cut oats are very nutritious.
Oats have many health benefits that make them one of the best breakfast to have in the morning. Read more about the benefits of oats here.
How we prepare our oatmeal?
The first thing I do every morning when I enter my kitchen is to cook the steelcut oats, which I soak overnight. Soaking the steelcut oats helps to quicken the cooking process. I will add more water if required and cook the oats for about 10 minutes until the oats start to bubble. I will off the heat, cover the lid and let the oats stand for 10 to 15 minutes while I prepare our morning vegetable and fruit juice.
I tried instant oats, rolled oats and steelcut oats and I like steelcut oats the most for the nutty taste and chewy texture.
There are many ways to have a delicious and warm oatmeal breakfast. These are some suggested toppings for the oatmeal:
- raisins
- dried cranberries
- raw cacao powder
- ground cinnamon
- ground flaxseed
- ground nutmeg
- sunflower seeds
- chopped walnuts
- apples
- avocado
- banana
- manuka honey
What a great way to start our day with nutrient-packed steelcut oat breakfast!
